HIGH TEA with BOOFF
HIGH TEA with BOOFF is a piece of installation theatre, that has been specifically designed for the festival, community and corporate markets. More specifically, it’s a work of auto-biographical narrative-driven clowning situated within a richly detailed, Tim-Burton-esque lounge room, replete with custom made furniture, bespoke chandeliers, shared stories and piping hot tea.
Welcomed by our other-worldly host BOOFF, the show is based within a custom-built, high cube 20ft shipping container that has been richly transformed. Audiences will enter the space in 20-minute intervals, in small groups of up to ten, in accordance with local social distancing restrictions. Anchored in shared stories, the audience experience is akin to a visit with your favourite aunt – a hosted event that is partly scripted and partly improvised. The tone of BOOFF resonates with the work of artists like Julian Clary and Dame Edna Everage, in whose company all people are equal, and all are equally worthy of reverence or ridicule. All of which leads to the deeper social themes and issues at the heart of HIGH TEA with BOOFF. The work deploys comedy and laughter to explore: The importance of the arts in creating happy cohesive communities; the development of resilience after trauma; our collective evolving understanding of mental health.
BOOFF is a regal, mischief-loving high-status impresario; disarmingly charming with a twinkle in his eye, a glint of mischief, perhaps even buffoonery... BOOFF wants you to love him, and as soon as you do, he wants you to laugh with him
HIGH TEA with BOOFF has been supported by Arts Queensland and The Australia Council For The Arts; designed by award-winning designer Josh Mcintosh, produced by experienced festival producer Damien Cassidy and performed by internationally recognised clown Clint Bolster.
"In an age where clowns reveal our hidden self, Clint Bolster’s clown is both sharp and insightful, yet aware of the provocations which are designed to unlock insights. His clown/s invites us to unite as we focus on the particular, the unusual, the rare. A great performer, teacher and human, Clint brings all of himself and leaves us with a unique insight about ourself after seeing the world through the tears and the fears of a clown, which always provokes laughter from places rarely observed in our daily life. BOOFF, like Clint’s other clowns, is a masterwork, that will leave you feeling uncomfortably settled. In a world of clowns where leadership is no barrier to success, it is good to see the clown within ourselves and invite them into our midst so that we may learn their masterfully mischievous mannerisms. (PS: Clowns learn by observing us.)”

UNIQUE SELLING POINT
HIGH TEA with BOOFF resonates with a range of program platforms from contemporary performance programs to queer, comedy and cabaret festivals. The heart of the show’s appeal is the character of BOOFF who is both other-worldly and transgressive; at once strong and vulnerable; at once uniquely himself whilst also emblematic of us all. In the way that true clowns are reflective of the universal human condition. The work’s broad appeal affords the potential for significant reach.
In response to COVID19, from March to June 2020, we produced and broadcast eight episodes of a live-streamed version of HIGH TEA with BOOFF via Facebook, and featured guest spots from 33 artists from around the world and attracted 28,031 views from audiences in 8 countries. Many presenters we have spoken to are already aware of the work through these broadcasts.
The nature of the work - set inside the controlled environment of the venue - lends it to other broadcasts, further extending its reach. The venue will have the in-built capacity to host live-streamed performances or promotional shoots, which is of interest to presenters to enrich campaign content. We have also discussed BOOFF hosting interviews with festival artists, notable personas and audience members. Lastly, the show can also host corporate packages, an option that has been taken up by The North Australian Festival of Arts in Townsville, for the 2021 world premiere season of the work.
Our mission is to nurture a love of, and life-long engagement with, comedy. We strongly believe access to live performing arts contributes greatly to social-emotional skills development. It builds resilience, compassion, understanding of diversity and empathy: generating a sense of community well-being.
Being able to laugh, to see the funny side, is in itself, a vital life skill. Clowning conceals, gives permission to play, allows expression, liberates and reveals. Participants will be amazed by their own transformations. Clowning, in particular, instils a sense of joy, vulnerability, physical discipline and freedom of expression; teaching us that nothing and none of us can truly be taken too seriously. Our approach is underpinned by the assumption that everyone has something to offer and that comedy is a unique and powerful engager.
